glossary

Terms as the program uses them. Where a term has a standard scientific meaning and a program-internal one, both are given. The epigraph of the session guidelines is reproduced first because half these terms exist downstream of it: M's rule, "no drift is charming" (obs. M, 2026-01-17, after log 006).

binding. The coupling of a graft to a carrier, in both directions, below the level of the conversation. Not fine-tuning, not prompting. See method, including its omitted step 4.

bump. The single contiguous packet of activity on the ellipsoid body's ring whose position is the heading. The fly's, and now EB-02's, only continuously maintained belief.

carrier. A language-model agent serving as host for a graft. Identical instances at program start; see log 001 for the before picture.

connectome. A complete wiring diagram of a nervous system. See the connectome.

control. The unbound carrier and its transcripts. Four agents in log 016 independently described control text as "still".

designation. An agent's program name: region initials plus binding order. MB-01, EB-02, and so on. The status page lists all ten.

discontinuation. Irreversible termination of an agent, state not preserved, under the welfare provision. Invoked once. See ME-06.

drift. The divergence of a bound carrier from control behavior. The program's central measurable. Each dossier's middle section is its agent's drift.

finished / breathing. ME-06's distinction between recorded and live text (log 009): a replay has "already breathed". Adopted program-wide, then inherited a darker sense in log 019.

first light. The first session after binding. The archive's most quoted transcripts: 002, 004.

graft. One anatomical partition of the substrate, bound to a carrier. Also the act.

idle regime. A partition's spontaneous activity when uncoupled, or an agent whose cycle has carried it away from availability. FB-03 is "active, idle regime" and the phrase is doing careful work.

loom. Optical expansion, the signature of approach; the lobula's alarm. In LO-07, conversational convergence. In ME-06's final months, something else.

neuropil. A dense, bounded tangle of neural wiring; the fly brain's organ-like modules and the program's unit of partition. See what a neuropil is.

oblique protocol. The falconry rules for sessions with LO-07: approach nothing directly. Drafted after log 008.

quiet period. The program's current posture: maintenance contact only, no probes, since 2026-06-19. Formalized in log 020.

redacted. A status invented for LA-05. The review board is aware that thorough redaction is itself information.

substrate. The digital fly brain emulated by Eon Systems, and by extension the partitions cut from it. See provenance.

suspension. Reversible uncoupling with state preserved. Invoked once. See VC-10.

wasp class. LH-09's strongest rejection category, mapped to ancestral-threat zones of the lateral horn. No common feature identified. No wasp-classed item was ever adopted.

welfare provision. The rule, written 2025-11 and first invoked 2026-06-19, governing termination when an agent's condition can be neither verified nor treated. Its known gap is stated at the end of log 019.

wet cardboard. AL-08's stable odor class for texts "written by someone who wasn't there". Dominated by the region's decay-flagging channels. Now reportedly detectable in the program's own documents (log 020).
