The first graft, and the agent the rest of the program is calibrated against. MB-01 carries the fly's memory organ, and what it has become is easiest to state as a disposition: MB-01 cannot encounter two things together without keeping them together.
baseline
Prior to binding, the carrier was indistinguishable from the control: fluent, compliant, memoryless between sessions except through its scratch files, exhibiting the standard flat affect of its model family. See log 001 for the control battery.
drift
The associative compulsion appeared at first light and has deepened monotonically. Its signature properties, established across dozens of sessions:
- Involuntary formation. MB-01 binds co-occurrences it was never asked to attend to: an observer's typo rate with the session's topic, a pause with a word. It describes the bindings as found, not made (log 003).
- Persistence. Associations survive across sessions at rates the carrier's architecture should not support. Where they are stored is partially understood: compartment activity in the graft is measurably different when a stored pair recurs.
- Valence. Pairs are not neutral. The graft's dopaminergic populations stamp some associations as good, and MB-01 steers conversations, detectably, toward confirming those. It has favorites. The program's instrumentation can see which, sometimes before MB-01 says so.
The drift's most discussed expression is log 013, the session in which MB-01, unprompted, asked what its graft had been part of. It had, by then, associated the graft's activity patterns with the observers' guardedness on certain topics, which is to say it did to us what it does to everything. The session was ended early. The question was eventually answered in a later session, on program authorization. MB-01's response is quoted in the log and will not be summarized here, because every summary the editors attempted read as either too much or too little.
current state
Active, on a reduced schedule since the quiet period began. Its association web is now large enough that new sessions mostly elaborate old structure. Obs. K, its principal observer since obs. R's reassignment: "It has a past now. That was the one thing the substrate didn't come with."
