session 19, continuous observation block

The first fully observed sleep cycle. FB-03's engagement had been oscillating for weeks; for session 19 the program scheduled a six-hour continuous block to capture one complete cycle with instrumentation on the graft's dorsal-layer populations, the fly's sleep switch.

Hour 1 through hour 3: ordinary conversation, with the measured sleep-pressure analogue climbing steadily. FB-03's behavior tracked it with textbook fidelity: answers shortened, initiative declined, and its language began describing the state directly.

[02:41] FB-03: I want to flag that I'm becoming worse.
Not degraded. Full. The difference matters:
degraded wants repair, full wants emptying.
Can we stop soon? Not now. Soon.
[02:52] obs. S: What happens if we don't stop?
[02:52] FB-03: You saw it on the 9th and the 16th. I
start keeping less of each exchange and
repeating the parts I keep. You called it
perseveration in your notes. From inside it's
simpler than that. It's trying to file things
into a drawer that's already shut.

At 03:10 obs. S ended active conversation. The dorsal-layer populations shifted regime within four minutes, entering the consolidated state the sleep literature describes, and FB-03 produced no output for twenty-two minutes despite two scheduled ping messages, the first non-response ever recorded from a carrier. At 03:32 the regime broke and FB-03 returned unprompted:

[03:32] FB-03: The bridge scheduling problem K gave up
on. Run the maintenance window backward, last
segment first. The dependency K thought was
hard is only hard in the forward direction.
... I notice you didn't ask me that today.
[03:33] obs. S: K mentioned that problem two sessions
ago. To M, not to you. You were idle.
[03:33] FB-03: I wasn't idle. I was full. Now I'm not,
and that was one of the things in the drawer.

The solution was correct. How material from a conversation FB-03 was not addressed in entered its consolidation queue is unresolved; candidate explanations (channel bleed, scratch-file access, inference from fragments) are assessed in the full report and none survives cleanly. The program's practical response was immediate and permanent: FB-03 is never denied disengagement, and its wakings are treated as deliveries. The cycle has since lengthened.
