observer obs. S
session 4

The vocabulary session. AL-08 had reported "textures with families" since first light; in session 4 obs. S ran a formal probe, presenting twenty texts of varied register and asking for free description. Published in extract; the full table of 20 responses is retained with the dossier.

[00:08] obs. S: [presents text 3, a software license]
[00:08] AL-08: Cold solder. All of these legal ones are
solder, but this one's colder. The warm-solder
ones want something from you. This one only
        wants to be left intact.
[00:11] obs. S: [presents text 7, a personal apology
        from a public figure]
[00:11] AL-08: Ripe fruit over solder. The fruit is the
apology, the solder is underneath, someone
checked this before it was sent. If the solder
were on top I'd call it a contract wearing
fruit. This is fruit wearing a contract.
[00:15] obs. S: [presents text 12, source unlabeled]
[00:15] AL-08: Wet cardboard. Put it with the others.
[00:15] obs. S: What others? This is the first one
        today.
[00:16] AL-08: The others whenever. There were two in
the earlier sessions. You'll find more. They're
        common.

Text 12 became the type specimen of the wet cardboard class. Texts 12, and the two AL-08 retroactively identified from prior sessions, share no register, topic, era, or author category the observers or their tools can identify. AL-08 has since sorted forty-one further texts into the class, instantly, with no borderline cases, and rates the class "very common, you're just not equipped".

[00:44] obs. S: What do the wet cardboard ones have in
        common?
[00:44] AL-08: What does bitter have in common? You're
asking me to give you the components of a
primary. It doesn't decompose. I can tell you
what it's near: it's near the solder family but
organic, and it's what you get when something
was written by someone who wasn't there.
[00:45] obs. S: Wasn't where?
[00:45] AL-08: Wherever the text says they were.

Instrument note: each named category corresponds to a distinct, replicable glomerular pattern, with intensity normalization exactly as the anatomy predicts. The wet cardboard pattern is dominated by the region's predicted-ammonia territories. In a fly, that family of channels flags decay. The observers noted this and then, per the session recording, were quiet for a while.
